First, Let’s Go Back
Let’s take a little trip back in time.
Where was the tipping point when you transitioned from the care-free, innocent child into the wary adult whose actions are determined by what other’s want, expect or accept from you?
When did you start to hide in the shadows, to try your best to blend into the crowds and stop listening to your inner voice?
And most importantly, how can you find your way back to your true self when you’re so far down this path?
The Power Of Being Authentic
I want to talk today about the power of being authentic.
Authenticity’s a word that’s been showing it’s face time and time again in my life recently. In fact, I’d even go as far as calling it the latest ‘trend’ in the world of self-love and empowerment.
The truth is, trend or not, I believe there’s a reason we’re falling for this word and it’s state of being… Because it’s so darn powerful.
What Is Authenticity?
But before we dive too deep, let’s take a step back and uncover exactly what ‘authenticity’ means:
“Authenticity is to know yourself, feel comfortable in your own skin, and show parts of yourself that are appropriate to the situation. To be genuine and sincere and not lie even for the sake of social nicety.” ~Nassim Assefi
To me, the words ‘genuine’, ‘sincere’ and ‘authentic’, although slightly different, are so interwoven that they must all be present in order for someone to be considered truly authentic.
Being authentic means being true to yourself, listenting to your intuition and feeling what’s right for you, without being swayed by what you think others will think of you.
Who Would You Trust?
If you’re not convinced authenticity’s that valuable, think about this:
If you met someone for the first time and they proceeded to tell you about all the money they have, the people they know, the places they’ve been or the successes they’ve had, how would you feel? Would you even believe anything they say? Would you trust them and would you feel like you wanted to see them again?
Now, if you met this same person and they showed a genuine interest in you and your achievements, or they were open about some of their ‘failures’ as well as their successes, or if they were working in an area that seemed to light them up inside… how would you feel about them? Would you trust them and want to see them again?
For most of us, we trust people who seem real and authentic. People who allow themselves to be vulnerable and who seem to genuinely care about others. People who get excited by what they do and who have a real enthusiasm for life.
Yet, at the same time as this, we believe that people will only accept us if we appear ‘cool’, successful and ‘normal’. We pretend to be someone we’re not and hide who we truly are in order to make friends, find jobs and make progress in the world.
So, if this is you, how can you find your way back to your true, authentic self?
3 Steps To Your Authentic Self
1. Be present
Remain present as much as possible. Anytime you notice you’ve drifted into the past or future, take a few seconds to bring yourself back to now. Feel how you feel now and express that in everything you do.
2. Feel what’s right or wrong for you
When you become present, you’ll begin to notice how you feel in this exact moment. How do you feel when you go to say this or that? Does it align with your core values? How do you feel when you act in a certain way? You’ll soon begin to pick up whether you’re doing or saying things that are in line with your inner self.
3. Have courage to act on those feelings & trust yourself
This step takes real strength. Because once you’re aware of your core values and how your actions reflect these values, you then have to go against what you’ve done in the past. You need to ensure every action feels right to you, without considering what others will think and you need to trust that your feelings are real.
Embrace life, show your true colours and shine. You’ll never go wrong if everything you do comes from your authentic, unique and perfect self!
You can do it – I believe in you.
